25 years ago today
Before us Addicks fans wallow in too much self-pity, it is worth remembering what happened to Charlton exactly 25 years ago today.
On 26 Feb 1983, Charlton went to struggling Burnley and lost 7-1, finishing the game with nine men after both Derek Hales and Mark Aizlewood saw red.
Amazingly, with just 13 minutes to go, the score was just 2-1, but there was still plenty of time left for both Billy Hamilton and Steve Taylor to register hat-tricks.
To put the scoreline in perspective, Burnley ended up being relegated that season, whilst Charlton finished in a dismal 17th place, saving themselves from a possible relegation with a 4-1 final day home win over Bolton.
There were goals galore that season, with an incredible 149 goals being scored in total during Charlton's 42 games, at a ridiculous rate of 3.55 per game. To put this in perspective, this season Addicks fans have been treated to just 2.65 goals per game.
Some other notable scorelines that season included:
Wolves 5, Charlton 0
Charlton 1, Rotherham 5
Sheff Wed 5, Charlton 4
Charlton 5, Chelsea 2
QPR 5, Charlton 1
Newcastle 4, Charlton 2
Charlton 3, Wolves 3
Ah, the days of Allan Simonsen. Simmo shot over when well placed about three times in that match - it could all have been so different! The ref was a shocker - so plent of similarities to this season... Hopefully we will finish above 17th...?
What a season, we had to score 4 to win. I remember the Bolton game vividly.
If memory serves (doubtful) the Rotherham game left our management coveting Tony Towner and Ronnie Moore, who cost me a tenner.
Better, I suppose, than when we got stuffed by Plymouth and thereafter signed their key man, High McAuley, cunningly avoiding being fooled by the folls gold that was Paul Mariner...
And blimey - all four of the above have entries on Wikipedia...
Almost sure I was at Park View Rd watching Welling when this one was played - I certainly was when the Hillsborough 5-4 happened. Used to be funny looking round and seeing all the familiar faces from The Valley there, usually crowded around anyone who had a radio checking on how Charlton were doing. That last day against Bolton was one to remember, felt like we had won the cup.
As a young man, I would often go to Welling if I couldn't afford the money or the time to an away game. They used to announce the Charlton score during the game I recall and at least at h-t. Does that still happen?
Don't know if they still give the CAFC score, I haven't been there for a long time. As well as the Welling games, when Gritty first took over the reserves, those games were far more fun than that last year at Selhurst. Mind you, having your teeth pulled out would be for that matter.
and the Bolton game finished with some Benny Hill moments between Charlton fans and the Old Bill.
In those pre play off days your season finished way before May.
Bit like this one is going...
